CUPERTINO, Calif. -- January 12, 1992 -- Symantec Corporation (NASDAQ: SYMC) today announced GreatWorks version 2.0, a new version of its fully-integrated program for, the Macintosh. GreatWorks version 2.0, which includes eight full-featured applications in one easy to use program, offers superior integration, enhanced color capabilities and many new features, and enables customers to perform a variety of tasks while spending minimal time learning to use the software. "GreatWorks version 2.0 is the only integrated product for the Macintosh offering eight easy to use applications in one program while providing the powerful integration of System 7's Publish and Subscribe," said Julie E. Bingham, vice president of productivity applications. Superior Integration and Color Capabilities GreatWorks version 2.0 provides superior integration between its eight application modules through Publish and Subscribe, a drawing and editing layer across all modules and enhanced dialogs and menu selections. Publish and Subscribe allows users to share information between GreatWorks documents and many other applications. For example, a user can create a logo in the GreatWorks Draw module and publish it to another module such as the Word Processor or Database or to another application such as a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet file. Claris XTND Technology file translators allow for import/export of data between products and across platforms. Each of the eight GreatWorks modules is supported by CORE Technologies which simplify the learning process with consistent techniques for performing common application activities. Once a feature is learned, it is used the same way in every module. CORE Technologies include standard text and graphics engines, a 100,000 word spell checker with custom dictionaries, a 660,000 synonym thesaurus, five units of measurement for document rulers and grid lines and on-line HyperCard-based intuitive help. GreatWorks version 2.0 now includes a color Paint module and extensive graphics capabilities. GreatWorks supports 256 colors in all modules except Communications. New drawing tools, such as a bezier curve tool, and new painting tools, such as an airbrush tool with flow and size control, have been added to enhance the functionality of the Draw and Paint modules. GreatWorks version 2.0 also includes custom fill patterns, editable arrowheads and dashed lines, tear-off menus from the tool palette and gradient colors. Quick and Easy Solutions GreatWorks version 2.0 makes common tasks even easier for the user. E-Z Envelopes in the Word Processing module prints envelopes automatically. Check box labels can be turned on or off in the Outline module to easily generate "to do" lists. In the Spreadsheet module, cells can be filled with both patterns and colors for enhanced reports and presentations. The Database module allows the user to add automatic serial numbers to database records for producing unique business forms. A print preview mode is now available across all modules. System 7 Savvy GreatWorks version 2.0 offers eight full-featured application modules (Word Processor, Database, Spreadsheet, Chart, Draw, Paint, Outline and Communications) with complete support for System 7 including Publish and Subscribe, AppleEvents, Balloon Help, True Type font technology, Virtual Memory and 32-bit addressing. Because GreatWorks version 2.0 requires only 930K of available random access memory (RAM) to operate, any Macintosh user with a minimum of 1 megabyte (Mb) of available RAM can take full advantage of its powerful features. Pricing and Availability GreatWorks version 2.0 will be available in the first quarter of 1992 through Symantec's network of distributors and resellers. The suggested retail price is $299. The upgrade price is $49.
